Byrd, 37, was 7-10 with a 4.53 earned run average in 22 starts with Cleveland this season, but the right-hander has gone 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break.

The veteran righty will likely take the spot in Boston's rotation vacated by the injured Tim Wakefield. The Red Sox announced last weekend that Wakefield will be placed on the disabled list with tightness in his right shoulder. He was scheduled to start Tuesday against the Rangers.

Boston will be the seventh stop of Byrd's career, having spent time with the New York Mets, Braves, Phillies, Royals and Angels. He has compiled a 104-91 record in 330 games -- 242 starts.
